Deliverance in the Bible

"DELIVER me, O LORD, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man; which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war.  They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders' poison is under their lips.  Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked."

Deliverance is defined as 'the action of being rescued or set free; a rescue from bondage or danger.'

In the Bible, deliverance is the acts of God by which He rescues His people from trials and peril.

Deliverance is often sought from evil spirits or the spirit of guilt, lust, jealousy, doubt, evil speech, etc.  But it’s important to understand that, as believers, we already have eternal victory over Satan and his power.  We can be delivered from the evil influences in our lives by using the weapons God has given us, described in Ephesians 6:12-17

"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."

Deliverance from sin, rescue from trials, and escape from the influence of a world in the control of Satan can only come through Christ, the Son of God who has come and 'hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.'

"For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness."

  2. This is an encouraging post! How beautiful to remember that we are /already/ delivered from sin, and that God gives us the tools to fight the flesh. :)

  3. Hi Chryslyn! I'm here from Bethany's blog. This is a very encouraging post, and so refreshing to read after the events of the last week. I really enjoyed your post on modesty too, as well as the clothes you pinned. Very cute, but modest!
